Students tell of cash fight with temptation

Almost 40percent of university students are unable to control their spending, with trendy goods being the main attraction.
And 38percent said they have no idea how they spend their money. Nearly 30percent said they could not resist the temptation of owning a trendy article such as a mobile phone or handbag.
These are the findings of a survey of 286 undergraduates from April 11 to 23 by the world’s largest student-led organization and credit card company Visa.
Emy Chan Hoi-ying, a Year One student at the University of Hong Kong, found that her life changed for the better after learning about personal financial management.
“In the past I went shopping very often and would buy clothes on impulse without thinking if I had a similar dress at home,” Chan said.
“This made me waste money unnecessarily. I would always not have enough for things that I wanted.”
Her spending rose after she entered university as she lived in a hostel and not at home.
“I thought it would be better to start to learn how to control my spending,” she said.
Chan now sets goals for herself and manages her finances accordingly to save money to reach her targets. She is planning to go to Europe on an exchange program and needs to save HK$70,000.
“After working part-time as a ticketing officer in an amusement park and giving piano lessons, I am more than half- way there,” she added.
The survey findings also reveal that three- quarters of Hong Kong students believe that financial management should be incorporated into the general studies curriculum.
To educate young people on financial planning, Visa and student organization AIESEC launched a “Navigate My Future” program that runs until June.
The scheme includes talks on how to better manage finances.
“We hope to equip young people with financial management skills,” said Ho Ka-man, director of corporate relations at Visa Hong Kong.
“It is important for young people to have the opportunity to pick up money management skills as it can be useful for both short-term and long-term goals.”
