Vote offers some hope on hospital bid

The move indirectly supports a Hong Kong Baptist University bid to use the southern portion of the site for a Chinese medicine hospital.
The government wants to rezone the site in Kowloon Tong for residential use.
More than 200 students and teaching staff from the university protested outside the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon as the education panel met.
Deputy Secretary for Food and Health Janice Tse Siu-wa revealed there was an “unofficial meeting” in October with the university during which it expressed difficulty in building the hospital with the Tsim Sha Tsui District Kaifong Welfare Association and suggested the former Lee Wai Lee site. However, the government received the proposal only last month.
Baptist University president Albert Chan Sun-chi said it was an “official meeting to us, and the bureau agreed to communicate with other departments.”
There were eight votes in favor of the motion and one abstention. No one voted against.
The university said it welcomes the panel decision.
It hopes the government “will respect and take into consideration public opinion and withdraw its proposal.”
