A new survey has shown that most employers perceive Generation Y employees to be lazy but creative.
More ominous for the employment prospects of this next generation is that employers see them, in a list of five attributes, as, first, “self- centered” and, second, “impatient.”
According to the Census and Statistics Department, Generation Y refers to those born after 1980 and are now aged between 15 and 24.
For the record, creativity came in third, laziness fourth and a lack of responsibility fifth.
But the subjects see themselves as creative and energetic, and believe they should not be tied down by too many restrictions. The poll, the first of its kind and commissioned by the Continuing Professional Development Alliance, covers 165 employers and 323 staff.

CPDA chairwoman Virginia Choi Wai-kum said the difference in dynamics could represent a change in the way workplaces function.
“Employees from Generation Y tend to prefer to have some sense of ownership, instant validation and more flexibility,” Choi said.
“This is different from the older generations that would prefer to just do their work with little regard for recognition.”
The poll also found that while employers and employees believe in the importance of mentorship at work, the younger generation prefers to be “partnered” rather than “mentored.”
Both sides see monetary compensation benefits as being one of the most important factors when job hunting.
Shipping company human resources manager Rita Lucina Tsui said her Generation Y employees tend to value a work-life balance.
“They will request days off on special occasions such as birthdays. But they\u2019re passionate about their job. Gen Y employees are willing to put in long hours to do something well,” Tsui said.
